The revitalization of the Old Pasadena Historic District represents a true grass roots effort by the historic preservation, business, and property ownership community in cooperation with the City of Pasadena/Commission to save the Old Pasadena District from demolition. It is one of the earliest efforts (1978) to transform a blighted older downtown area into a vital neotraditional urban village. The district overcame incredible odds - saving the area from planned demolition, attracting major investors to an area which had been blighted for many years and the adaptive reusing of historic buildings in accordance with the Secretary of Interior Standards for Rehabilitation. The revitalization effort is a comprehensive one representing a major public investment in award-winning public parking facilities and approximately $400 million in private investment. Currently, $5 million is committed by the City for major streetscapes and alley walkway improvements. Newly completed housing in Old Pasadena, in combination with additional planned housing in and adjacent to the district and a regional light rail system, will complete the vision for Old Pasadena as a "hometown downtown" - a new downtown for the 21st century city.
