A dragon is watching you
in the Playhouse District. Perched just above your head, its
scaly body undulates up and down and wraps around the
streetlight pole, jaws poised to release its fiery breath.
Over there a trombone player bends almost impossibly
backward, straining to hit that high note. If you look
closely, you will find 25 of these sculptures sprinkled
throughout the Pasadena Playhouse District. Titled
“Harlequinade,” these playful pieces ingeniously utilize cut
out sections of the harlequin diamond shape—so familiar as a
part of the Playhouse District Association’s marketing
campaign—to allow a “peek” inside each one. Created by
internationally-known artist Wayne Healy of East Los
Streetscapers, this public art project incorporates images
of the arts, science and technology as a part of the
Playhouse District’s identity as a center for culture,
community and commerce. Full color images of dragons,
astronomers, pianists, designers, “Zoot Suit” figures,
chefs, dancers and trombone players were crafted on metal
sheets that wrap around many of the light poles along Los
Robles Avenue and Walnut and Union Streets.
Pedestrians are encouraged to walk around the sculptures in
order to view each particular design.
